What is Forms Processing?
In the course of our lives we fill out hundreds of forms - surveys, tests, application forms, insurance claims, etc. Some of these forms are structured and some are unstructured. Organizations have to collect those forms and get the information into a computer. Forms processing involves doing this efficiently.
Forms processing is a process whereby information entered into data fields is converted into electronic form:
entered data are "captured" from their respective fields |
forms themselves are digitized and saved as images. |
Forms processing software can interpret machine-print (OCR), isolated handprint
(ICR), including alpha and numeric, mark sense (OMR), and barcodes from paper
forms gathered from a scanner or a fax machine.
In a low volume system, this is how a typical forms processing system would work:
A single computer is used for the scanner and the forms processing software |
A batch of completed forms is scanned using a scanner |
Forms with no questions are sent automatically to your database or spreadsheet |
Any questionable fields are reviewed by a single operator |
Verified data and a copy of the image is saved into a database or spreadsheet |
In a high volume system, individual tasks are distributed to multiple computers as required to handle production requirements and maximize throughput.
